La trama dell’opera è intrigante e complessa. Si tratta della storia di un ragazzino nato sordo, cieco e muto, e di cosa gli capita nel corso della sua vita. Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend, detto Pete, leader e chitarrista dello storico gruppo rock The Who, racconta così quello che volevano fare:
Il progetto che spero andrà in porto si chiamerà Deaf, Dumb and Blind Boy … Egli viene rappresentato musicalmente, rappresentato da un tema che suoniamo noi, che apre e chiude l’opera stessa, e poi c’è una canzone specifica che descrive il suo essere sordomuto e cieco …

L’opera rock, Tommy, composta dagli Who che è entra, di buon diritto, nelle classifiche mondiali durante gli anni ’70, nasconde tanti piccoli segreti che pochi conoscono e alcuni aneddoti che vale la pena raccontare.
